CLASSIC CLUBMANS CHAMPIONSHIP 2008
For the eighth time this year Mark Charteris proved unstoppable, as the Classic Clubmans made their annual visit to Cadwell Park.
Only 13 cars made the trip with Champion Charteris taking pole in his Mallock Mk20B by a massive 3.79secs over the similar car of Malcolm Jackson.
Gavin Childs Gryphon C73/75 returned to the championship to post third best time, sharing the row with the Mallock Mk18BW of class B Champion Dave Facer. US commuter Bob Crozier lined up fifth in his Mallock Mk11, with Mike Sales’ class B Phantom P79 alongside. The Centaur of Howard Watkins shared row three with Ian Mitchell’s IM, with Alan Davenport’s Mallock Mk18 and Michael Northern’s BMW R6 completing the top ten.
Tony Harman’s Haggispeed and the class C Mallock MK8’s of Richard Fry and Bob Yarwood completed the grid.
RACE
As the lights went out Charteris was straight into the groove and by the end of the opening lap he had already opened a 2.2secs lead over Jackson, which had virtually trebled after three laps.
Both Jackson and Childs soon became firmly established in second third, but Crozier had to work slightly harder to reclaim fourth, having lost out to Facer at the start. He made it by on the second lap however, but the order soon settled and there was little in the way battles. By the flag Charteris had pulled out a winning margin of 20 secs, with Jackson, Childs, Crozier and Facer, all holding station behind.
Northern was the only other class A car in ninth, led throughout by the class B cars of Sales, Mitchell and Watkins. Davenport came home 10th and Harman made it past class C winner fry with a lap to go. Yarwood completed the finishers, as everyone who started went the full distance.
