FUELFORCE CLASSIC CLUBMANS CHAMPIONSHIP 2004
Hickson
takes Welsh double
Mike
Hickson won twice in rounds eight and nine of the Fuelforce Classic Clubmans
Championship at Pembrey on 25/26 September. Meanwhile, in championship terms,
Barry Webb moved close to sealing a second Clubmans title.
The
opening race was red flagged twice. The first part was halted almost immediately
after a coming together between Mark Charteris and Darren Green at Hatchets on
the first lap. The race was restarted minus Charteris and with Green, sporting a
hastily patched up sidepod, starting from the pitlane.
Unfortunately,
the shortened race was then stopped again, just after half distance. Race leader
David Childs spun at Dibeni and was collected rather heavily by the closely
following Pete Harper. Thankfully Childs suffered nothing more than bruising,
but both cars were quite badly damaged.
This
drama left third placed Mike Hickson as the race winner, closely followed by the
rapidly improving Anthony Denham in the
In
Class B, it was Barry Webb all the way as he moved in on the overall title.
Pembrey specialist Ian Mitchell kept him honest in second whilst Dave Facer spun
away third, allowing Steve Chaplin through.
On
Sunday Hickson won from pole position in another shortened race. However,
Hickson's win only came on count-back after Denham squeezed into the lead just
as the red flags appeared. The stoppage came as the cars of Graham Onion and
Ewan Bason were stranded in dangerous positions. Once again Green took the final
podium place.
A
frenetic three-way Class B battle between Webb, Mitchell and Facer came to an
early conclusion after Facer spun at Brooklands. Webb managed to place an A
Class car cushion between himself and Mitchell to secure his second win of the
weekend. Charteris grabbed the final class podium place.
The
championship is now almost settled. Webb only needs to finish at Thruxton on 10
October to take the overall title. Hickson, courtesy of his two wins, has
wrapped up the Class A title and, along with Facer and Mitchell, could
theoretically win the overall title if Webb's car falters at the season finale.
