Three
drivers turned in a dramatic battle during the second round of the Fuelforce
Classic Clubmans Championship at Mallory Park on Bank Holiday Sunday (2 May).
Ultimately,
it was two drivers renowned for their pace at the tight Leicestershire track
that led the field home, with Mike Evans (Mallock Mk16) narrowly fending off
Malcolm Jackson (Mallock Mk20B) in the 19-lap race.
Initially,
David Childs (Phantom P79) made it a three-way lead battle and the racing was
superb as they diced wheel to wheel. Unfortunately, Childs went out at the
hairpin after inadvertent contact with Jackson sent him into the tyres.
Jackson
quickly recovered from the incident and maintained his chase of Evans all the
way to the flag, with barely half a second covering the pair of former Clubmans
champions at the end of a thrilling contest. Evans' average speed for the 19-lap
race was just over the 100mph mark.
Rather
over-shadowed by the mighty lead battle, Mike Hickson was a secure third in his
Mallock Mk20B, while Gavin Childs gave the family some recompense for his
father's drama by taking fourth in his Gryphon C73/75.
Barry
Webb added a second win in two races from Class B in his ex-Chris Hart Mallock
Mk16, while Marcus Bicknell claimed the invitation class in eighth place overall
in his Mallock Mk26/27.
